Fair Trade Hammocks Australia

September 12, 2016 2 min read

Since 2009 Hammocks Australia have been working with a fantastic Mexican company to produce our range of quality handmade hammocks. We were drawn to this company from the start due to not only the quality of their hammocks but also because of the fairness and social responsibility they have shown to their workers and local Mexican community.

So we were very proud to see them join the Fair Trade Federation in late 2014 and a Certified B Corporation since 2015. We know they work hard to achieve this and spent many years prior to certification focusing on best practice in their business. Not just for their own sake but also to help further the development in sustainable work opportunities, education and social potential for local artisans, their families and communities in smaller indigenous Mexican towns and villages through the Mexican state of Yucatan.

They have always believed in paying and treating their hammock weavers fairly for the quality work they produce. The artisan weavers who produce our hammocks have the freedom to work from home and are freely supplied with all the necessary materials and equipment to weave.

As well as the ongoing sustainable work opportunities recent initiatives to help these communities have included a non-profit arm that is aiming to provide a long and lasting impact to these communities through educational programs for children and adults alike. This is proving to be very well received with programs now continuing through to their second year and with the aim of this becoming a yearly initiative.

Fair Trade Federation members are guided by one primary purpose and that is to support farmers and artisans through the practice of fair trade. There are also 10 main fair trade principles, including areas such as paying promptly and fairly, creating opportunities to help alleviate poverty, promote fair trade, ensure the rights of children and more.

So if fair trade is an important consideration to you when shopping, be sure to check out our range of fair trade hammocksWe import directly from Merida, Mexico with all stock kept in Sydney, Australia. So when you purchase from Hammocks Australia you are not only helping to support an Australian company but also local Mexican artisans, their families and their communities. For that, we thank you and know you will relax much easier in your super comfortable Mexican hammock knowing the good you are doing!
