Tropical Hammock Relaxation in Tonga!

Published: June 10, 2010

I was lucky enough to recently celebrate my 30th birthday in the Kingdom of Tonga (lucky to be there, I didn't feel so lucky turning 30!).

A very beautiful and tranquil place which is an archipelago of 176 islands, of which 56 are inhabited. Like all the Pacific islands you can expect lovely golden sand, beaming sun, warm waters, great fresh seafood, and smiles all round.

I traveled with my family during April which turned out to be a very quiet time of year there. We pretty much had the whole resort (http://www.likualofaresort.com) to ourselves and we were very well looked after by the Angelina, John and the caring staff. They made a real effort to ensure we enjoyed our stay and every night put on activities or shows for us. These included a kava ceremony with traditional songs and dancing, a karaoke night, a bonfire night, island tour, and much more.

When we were not snorkeling, fishing, swimming, exploring or laying in our Mexican hammocks we would often just enjoy some relaxation time on the beautiful tree top bar overlooking the ocean. Many an hour was spent relaxing with a cold beer watching the waves break on the outer reef and setting sun.

I took a few hammocks along for the family to relax in, and found some great spots to hang them, as you can see from the photos.

Outside of the resort there are many other sites to explore including the amazing blowholes, Captain Cooks landing site, surf breaks, outer islands the local town and more.

If you are looking for a tropical holiday this winter, I would thoroughly recommend Tonga. Much like Fiji and Rarotonga, but not so developed with smaller scale accommodation and mostly family run businesses. The perfect spot for a little hammock time!
