The 2010 FIFA World Cup is done and dusted with Spain crowned champions of the world for the first time ever. Well done! Let’s take a quick look at how our online hammock store nations faired.
1. New Zealand All Whites (www.hammocksonline.co.nz)
The ONLY team in the World Cup to not lose a game! This says it all. They had three draws from their three group games and were definitely the biggest surprise during the event. Shame they didn’t get past the group stage as this would have been simply phenomenal. Nonetheless football in NZ is at an all time high and we can expect the momentum generated and valuable experience learned for future success. Several players who performed well have been snapped up by large international clubs which is great for the country. What the Socceroos were to Germany 2006; NZ were in South Africa 2010. Well done!
2. USA (www.hammockshopusa.com)
The US played exciting football which saw them top their group. Much like NZ they played with spirit and a nothing to lose attitude. However they ran out of puff in the round of 16 when they played Ghana. All in all a good effort and definitely one of the more entertaining teams in this year’s World Cup.
3. Australian Socceroos (www.hammocksaustralia.com.au)
The underperformance in the first game against Germany was marred by controversial refereeing decisions. This continued throughout the tournament which saw the two of the Aussies high profile players’ red carded (Tim Cahill in game one against Germany and then Harry Kewell in game two against Ghana). What the lads produced in 2006 unfortunately was not replicated in this World Cup. There were high expectations both with the players and fans which were not lived up to. The ageing team along with the some unlucky calls meant the Socceroos headed home when Germany and Ghana marched on to the round of 16 due to an inferior goal difference to Ghana.
4. South Africa - Bafana Bafana (www.hammockshop.co.za)
Much like NZ and USA the South African team put on gutsy performances against their opposition. In their first game they scored one of the best goals of the tournament which gave spectators around the world a taste of the exciting football to come. Very much like the above teams there weren’t big expectations on them progressing to the round of 16. However they came almightily close finishing on 4 points and only missing out on qualification through an inferior goal difference to Mexico.
To all the teams in this World Cup thanks for putting on such a great spectacle. It is great to see that every country we provide hammocks in were in the South African World Cup.
Until another four years…
