I recently read an article claiming 10 reasons why traveling in Costa Rica is better than in Mexico.. I haven't traveled in Costa Rica, but it made me think of all the great things about traveling in Mexico. Here is my own list of 10 great reasons to visit Mexico.
1. Climate - Beautiful weather year round always make traveling in Mexico a pleasure. While Mexico has a wet and dry season you are generally always greeted with beautiful warm weather that makes it ideal for swimming and relaxing by the beach. Casual days in board shorts and thongs, bikinis and sunnies always make for a fantastic leisurely trip.
2. Food - Delicious Mexican fare is always a highlight of any trip. From the more well know foods such as Tacos, burritos, nachos, through to tasty and simple lunch Tortas, beautiful Azteca soups, fresh juicy mangos and ripe bananas, along with unique native fare from each region provides a food lovers dream. From street stalls, and market bbq's through to restaurants you are sure to find something to your liking.
3. Beaches - From the raging surf racked coast of the Pacific across to the Gulf of Mexico and down to the beautiful warm coral waters of the Caribbean, Mexico has a beach for everyone. Excellent surfing can be found all along the Pacific Coast, from Baja in the North through to Oaxaca and further south. Popular locations include the surf resort town of Puerto Escondido where amazing year round world class surfing can be found. Veracruz in the East has its own lovely beach with views of the offshore oil rigs visible in the distance. Further south the waters turn turquoise blue as the Caribbean coast is found. All along this area great snorkeling and amazing diving can be found.
4. History - Mexico has a vibrant history which is well preserved and detailed through fantastic museums, cultural sites various archaeological parks and sites. These archaeological sites are typically composed of various structures, such as pyramids, temples and ancient cities. These sites are constantly being discovered and reconstructed for tourist purposes. While many are well exposed some required more effort to explore and find. These are often the hidden gems as they are away for the high density tourist sites and are in their natural state.
5. Transport - While Europe has its fantastic rail systems, Mexico has its own effective travel networks. From cheap flights and reliable bus services, through to local collectives' and taxis travel throughout the country is at times an adventure but you can always get to where you want without to much trouble. Often local private transport systems provide excellent alternatives and allow you to visit and enjoy many areas and locations that major services may pass by.
